EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Magpie Moth, Abraxas grossulariata, perched gracefully on a redcurrant branch (Ribes rubrum). The intricate details of the moth's vibrant wings, adorned with striking blue, green, and red markings, are beautifully captured in this engraving. The Magpie Moth is a member of the tiger moth family and is known for its distinctive appearance, which resembles a magpie with its multicolored wings. The engraving was drawn and etched by Jacob L. Admiral and published in the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects) by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774. For this edition, M. Houttuyn added eight additional plates to the original 25. The Magpie Moth's life cycle is depicted in the engraving, with the caterpillar or larva, pupa, and adult moth all shown. The redcurrant branch provides a natural backdrop for the moth, highlighting the delicate balance between insects and the plants they inhabit. The engraving is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time, making it an invaluable resource for entomologists and natural history enthusiasts.
