EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts the Indian Liquorice or Gunja plant, Abrus precatorius, as illustrated by David Blair for Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" published in London in 1880. The plant is shown in great detail, with its distinctive red and white seeds clearly visible among the green foliage. Indian Liquorice, also known as Goontch or Gunja, is a climbing herb native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. The seeds, which are the part of the plant used medicinally, are small, round, and encased in a red, sticky coating. They are often used as beads in jewelry and decorative arts, but their primary use has been in traditional medicine for centuries. The seeds of Indian Liquorice contain several bioactive compounds, including abrine and precatorine, which have been shown to have various therapeutic properties. They have been used traditionally to treat a range of ailments, including fever, dysentery, and diarrhea. The seeds have also been used as a natural source of a red dye and as a mordant in textile dyeing. The botanical illustration and handcolouring in this lithograph are of exceptional quality, providing a detailed and accurate record of the plant and its seeds. The image captures the intricacies of the plant's structure and the vibrant colours of its seeds, making it a valuable addition to any botanical or medical collection.
