EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, drawn and engraved by Andrea Bernieri from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy, in 1844, offers a glimpse into the diverse cultural landscape of Myanmar during the 19th century. The scene comprises three distinct figures: two members of the Kayan mountain tribe, a man and a woman, and a Cassay elite cavalryman of the Burmese imperial guard. The Kayan man and woman are depicted in their traditional attire. The woman wears a long, pleated skirt made of dark fabric, adorned with intricate silver rings and brass coils encircling her neck and chest. Her hair is styled in long, braided locks, and she carries a basket on her back. The man wears a short, white loincloth, and his body is adorned with tattoos. He carries a bow and arrows, emblematic of his status as a hunter and warrior. The Cassay cavalryman, a member of the Burmese imperial guard, is shown in his resplendent armor. He rides a horse, brandishing a long lance with a colorful pennon. His helmet is adorned with feathers and precious stones, and his chest is covered in intricate, gold-embroidered armor. A Birman peasant, dressed in a simple cotton tunic and trousers, completes the scene. He carries a shield and a sword, suggesting his role as a protector of his community. The Birman peasant's attire stands in stark contrast to the elaborate costumes of the Kayan and Cassay figures, highlighting the social and economic disparities that existed in Myanmar during this period. This handcoloured copperplate drawing, based on Michael Symes' Account of an Embassy to the Kingdom of Ava, provides a fascinating window into the rich cultural heritage of Myanmar, showcasing the diverse array of peoples and traditions that coexisted within its borders.
