EDITORS COMMENTS
Martha Washington Arrives at Cragie House: The Headquarters of George Washington in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1776 This evocative image captures the arrival of Martha Washington at Cragie House in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where her husband, George Washington, was serving as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Dressed in the height of 18th-century fashion, Martha Washington sits elegantly in an open carriage, accompanied by her maid and a mounted soldier. Her husband, George, rides beside her on horseback, both of them gazing intently in her direction. The Cragie House, also known as the Jabez Fitch House, served as the headquarters of the Continental Army during the Siege of Boston, which took place from April to October 1776. The house, located near the Charles River, was a strategic location for Washington and his troops, providing a vantage point to observe British movements and plan military tactics. Martha Washington's visit to her husband during this time was significant, as she was the first lady to assume the role of military wife during wartime. Her presence brought a sense of normalcy and morale to the soldiers, who were far from their homes and families. Martha's arrival at Cragie House also marked the beginning of her role as the first First Lady of the United States, a position she would hold until her husband's death in 1799. This photograph, taken from an original 18th-century print by Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the personal side of the American Revolution, showcasing the resilience and determination of the Washington family during a pivotal moment in American history.
