EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of the London Fire Brigade (LFB), showcasing GLC-LFB's Foam Tender L21 at East Ham fire station. The image was taken on April 1, 1965, during a series of commissioned photographs documenting each type of fire engine that was either within or absorbed into the enlarged London Fire Brigade. The vehicle in question is a mechanical bulk foam tender, specifically a Bedford lorry with a foam tank on the back. This appliance was originally stationed in the West Ham fire brigade, whose stations were absorbed into the London Fire Brigade that same year. The Bedford lorry, with its distinctive foam tank and fire pump, was an essential addition to the LFB's fleet, providing a valuable resource for tackling fires involving flammable liquids. The foam tender was a vital piece of equipment during the 1960s and 1970s, when the use of flammable liquids in industrial processes was more common. The foam tender's foam generator produced a thick, stable foam that could smother the fire and prevent it from spreading. The foam also helped to insulate the fuel from the heat of the fire, reducing the risk of re-ignition. This photograph is an important reminder of the evolution of firefighting equipment and the role that the London Fire Brigade plays in keeping Londoners safe. The GLC-LFB's Foam Tender L21, with its distinctive Bedford lorry and foam tank, is a symbol of the bravery and innovation of the fire service during the 1960s.
