Chevrolet Thornton military trucks lined up at Caerphilly Works, 1941

This image taken in April 1941 shows five Chevrolet Thornton military trucks lined up outside the GWRs works at Caerphilly. These trucks were imported from the USA and arrived unassembled in crates. They were then assembled in full at the Works. In March 1941 the Lend-Lease scheme was enacted. This was a program that allowed the USA to supply, or effectively lease, material and goods to Britain and the Allied forces. This included munitions, food, land vehicles, ships and aircraft. The trucks in this photograph have been painted in military camouflage colours and were likely destined for France

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR takes us back to April 1941, a significant time during World War II. The image showcases five Chevrolet Thornton military trucks lined up outside the Caerphilly Works in Wales. These trucks were not just any ordinary vehicles; they arrived unassembled in crates all the way from the United States. At Caerphilly Works, skilled workers meticulously assembled these imported trucks into fully functional military vehicles. This process was an essential part of Britain's war efforts as it relied on supplies and support from its allies across the Atlantic. In March 1941, a crucial program called Lend-Lease was enacted between Britain and the USA. Under this initiative, America provided material and goods to aid Britain and its Allied forces in their fight against Nazi Germany. Munitions, food, land vehicles like these Chevrolet Thorntons, ships, and aircraft were among the items supplied through this scheme. The significance of this photograph lies not only in capturing a moment at Caerphilly Works but also in highlighting how international cooperation played a vital role during wartime. Painted with military camouflage colors, it is likely that these trucks were destined for France or other battlefronts where they would serve as crucial transportation for troops or supplies. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot today, let us remember those who worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes to assemble these machines of war and recognize their contribution to securing victory during one of humanity's darkest chapters - World War II.
