EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, Lieutenant Ernest Gidden (1910-1961) is seen receiving the George Cross from King George VI during an investiture ceremony in 1942. The George Cross, the highest civilian decoration for gallantry, was awarded to Gidden for his extraordinary act of heroism in making safe a mine that had fallen on Hungerford Bridge in London during World War II. At the time of this momentous occasion, Gidden was the only individual in the United Kingdom to have been bestowed both the George Medal and the George Cross. He had previously received the George Medal in 1940 for his bravery in diffusing a mine in the Thames Estuary. Gidden is seen wearing his military uniform, adorned with various medals and decorations, as he proudly accepts the George Cross from the monarch. The King's expression conveys a sense of admiration and respect for the brave actions of this exceptional man. The backdrop of the room, filled with dignitaries and onlookers, underscores the significance of the moment. The mine that Gidden made safe on Hungerford Bridge posed a grave threat to the public, as it had fallen onto the bridge during an air raid. Despite the inherent danger, Gidden, without hesitation, put himself in harm's way to protect the lives of others. His quick thinking and courageous actions saved countless lives and earned him the highest recognition for gallantry. This photograph is a testament to the unwavering bravery and selflessness displayed by individuals during the tumultuous times of World War II. It serves as a reminder of the indomitable human spirit and the lengths to which people will go to protect their communities and loved ones.
