EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Edward VIII, the former King of the United Kingdom (1894-1972), is depicted in full naval uniform, standing proudly among the Welsh Guards. The year is 1935, and Edward is seen adorned with an abundance of braids, medals, and epaulettes, reflecting his rank as a Colonel in the regiment. At this time, Edward was still reigning monarch, having ascended to the throne in 1936 following the death of his father, George V. However, this image captures Edward just a year before he would make the shocking decision to abdicate the throne. In January 1936, Edward chose to relinquish his position as King in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite who was twice divorced. This decision was met with controversy and scandal, as divorce and remarriage were not accepted practices within the British monarchy at the time. As a result of his abdication, Edward became the Duke of Windsor and the Duke of Cornwall, relinquishing his role as monarch to his brother, George VI. This historic event marked a significant turning point in British monarchy, and Edward VIII is now remembered as a controversial figure in the annals of royal history. Despite the controversy surrounding his reign and abdication, this photograph serves as a reminder of Edward's military service and his time as King before the events that would forever change his life and the monarchy.
