Dummy injured soldier used during training, WW1

A dummy injured soldier used during training at Camouflage School, Kensington Gardens, during the First World War. The Germans would dress up a dummy in captured khaki to look like a British soldier, and place it in No Mans Land. Sometimes a hand or arm would be raised by means of a cord, as if asking for assistance. The idea was to lure British soldiers out to attempt a rescue, and then shoot them. Date: 1914-1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment during World War I training at Kensington Gardens' Camouflage School. In the image, a dummy injured soldier lies prone in the grass, his uniform authentically dressed in captured British khaki to deceive the enemy. The Germans employed such decoys to lure unsuspecting British soldiers out of the safety of their trenches, only to ambush them in No Man's Land. The dummy's outstretched arm, held aloft by a cord, appears to plead for assistance, adding a sense of urgency and vulnerability to the scene. The use of such deceptive tactics during the Great War was a testament to the innovative strategies employed by both sides in the conflict. The Camouflage School played a crucial role in teaching soldiers the art of disguise and deception, enabling them to outwit the enemy and gain the upper hand. The photograph serves as a stark reminder of the dangerous and unpredictable nature of trench warfare, where life could be lost in the blink of an eye. This image, taken between 1914 and 1918, offers a unique glimpse into the training grounds of the past. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during the First World War, and the innovative tactics employed to outwit the enemy.
