Michael Foot shaking hands with supporters during the walkabout

Michael Foot shaking hands with supporters during the walkabout.
Labour Party leader Michael Foot was given a rousing receeption when he visited Nuneaton. The crowd of about 1, 000 lined the route which was Stratford Street, Queens Road, Market Place and Coventry Street. Mr Foot was swept along by a tide of cheering supporters as he made his way from Labours headquarters in Abbey Street through the town centre to give a press conference at the Council House. At one stage of the walkabout Mr Foot was engulfed by his supporters. He made a rallying call on behalf of Nuneaton candidate John Haynes saying that Labour had drawn up an emergency programme to get the country back to work. But he warned: We are not saying we can get everyone back to work in a few days. there is no magic wand or remedy."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the charismatic Labour Party leader, Michael Foot, engaging with his enthusiastic supporters during a walkabout in Nuneaton. The image showcases the immense popularity of Mr. Foot as he shakes hands with numerous individuals along the route that spans Stratford Street, Queens Road, Market Place, and Coventry Street. A crowd of approximately 1,000 people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of their beloved political figure. As Mr. Foot traverses through the town center towards his destination at the Council House for a press conference, he is swept away by an overwhelming tide of cheering supporters. At one point during this vibrant walkabout, he becomes engulfed by his ardent followers who eagerly express their admiration and support. During his visit to Nuneaton, Mr. Foot seizes this opportunity to rally on behalf of local candidate John Haynes and emphasizes Labour's emergency program aimed at revitalizing employment opportunities in the country. However, he also cautions against unrealistic expectations by stating that there is no quick fix or magical solution to address all unemployment issues overnight. This nostalgic photograph not only encapsulates a significant moment in 1980s politics but also serves as a testament to Michael Foot's ability to connect with ordinary citizens on a personal level through handshakes and genuine interactions. It stands as an enduring symbol of democratic engagement and grassroots support within British politics.
