This evocative photograph captures the moment of history before it took a tragic turn. The image depicts Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, as they are warmly received during their visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia, in 1914. The Archduke and Duchess are greeted with smiles and waves from the crowd, unaware of the impending danger that awaits them. The Archduke and Duchess's visit to Sarajevo was intended to celebrate the anniversary of the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. However, their journey would be cut short by an assassination attempt. On June 28, 1914, as their motorcade made its way through the streets of Sarajevo, Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Serbian nationalist group, the Black Hand, fired two shots, fatally wounding the Archduke and Duchess. This photograph, taken anonymously, is a poignant reminder of the peaceful moment before the chain reaction of events that led to the First World War. The image stands as a testament to the fragility of peace and the unforeseen consequences of political tensions.
