The Raising of Lazarus, c.1530-c.1535. Creator: Aert Claesz
The Raising of Lazarus, c.1530-c.1535. Other Title(s): Centre Panel of a Triptych with the Raising of Lazarus.
Although there is no mention of it in the gospel, the artist shows St Peter loosening Lazarus's shroud, possibly as a symbol of freeing him from sin. This element was undoubtedly taken from another source, quite possibly a play about Lazarus of c. 1530. The inscription on the hem of the robe of the second man from the right in the foreground is a reference to Matthew 22:37

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "The Raising of Lazarus" and believed to be created by Aert Claesz around 1530-1535, showcases a pivotal moment from the New Testament. In this scene, Jesus (centre) raises Lazarus (reclining figure) from the dead, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers. The emotion and drama are palpable, with the figures' expressive faces and gestures. Notably, St Peter (bearded figure with keys) is depicted loosening Lazarus' shroud, an addition not mentioned in the gospel account. This symbolic act may have been inspired by a contemporary play about Lazarus from around the same period. The inscription on the hem of the robe of the second man from the right in the foreground reads "Matthew 22:37," further emphasizing the biblical connection. Aert Claesz masterfully captures the essence of this biblical scene, inviting the viewer to contemplate the power of faith and the miracle of resurrection. This print is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the 16th century, and a reminder of the enduring influence of the Bible on Western art.
