Artwork of pteranodon sternbergi
Pteranodon (meaning winged and toothless ) was one of the largest known pterosaurs, or flying reptiles, with a wing span of more than 6 metres (20 ft). It lived in North America at the end of the Cretaceous period, but vanished along with all other pterosaurs, the dinosaurs and other animals some 65 million years ago. Two species of Pteranodon are recognised, differentiated only in the shape of the crest on the skull. The crest of P. sternbergi, shown here, was more upright compared to that of the other species, P. longiceps. Both species were carnivorous, probably feeding mostly on fish

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the majestic Pteranodon sternbergi, a remarkable creature that once soared through the prehistoric skies. With its wings spread wide, this pterosaur boasted an impressive wing span of over 6 meters, making it one of the largest known flying reptiles to have ever existed. Belonging to the late Cretaceous period in North America, Pteranodon sternbergi was unfortunately wiped out along with all other pterosaurs and dinosaurs some 65 million years ago. However, thanks to stunning illustrations like this one by MARK GARLICK, we can still marvel at their existence today. In this particular print, attention is drawn to the distinct crest on P. sternbergi's skull. Compared to its counterpart species P. longiceps, this crest stands more upright and serves as a unique feature that sets them apart from each other. As carnivorous creatures, these magnificent beings likely relied heavily on a diet consisting mainly of fish. Although no longer present in our world today, their legacy lives on through paleontological discoveries and artistic interpretations such as this breathtaking computer-generated image. Whether you are a lover of paleontology or simply captivated by ancient life forms, this artwork offers a glimpse into the awe-inspiring world of Pteranodon sternbergi—a true testament to Earth's rich history and diverse inhabitants throughout time.
