Examining patients thorax using X-ray tube and fluorescent screen. X-ray tube
Examining patients thorax using X-ray tube and fluorescent screen. X-ray tube (on tripod) is set at reqauired height and patient stands directly in front of it. In front of patient, operator holds specially coated paper screen. When X-rays fall on paper, coating fluoresces, leaving as shadows those dense portions of thorax, such as bones, which absorb X-rays. Engraving, Leipzig, 1903. Many who worked with early x-rays suffered the effects of over-exposure to radiation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage engraving from 1903 captures a pivotal moment in the history of medicine and physics. In the image, we see a patient undergoing examination of their thorax using an X-ray tube and fluorescent screen. The X-ray tube, positioned on a tripod at the required height, emits X-rays towards the patient who stands directly in front of it. To capture the X-ray images, an operator holds a specially coated paper screen in front of the patient. As the X-rays pass through the patient's body, certain dense portions such as bones absorb them while others allow them to pass through. This phenomenon creates shadows on the specially coated paper screen where these dense portions are present. The coating on the paper fluoresces when exposed to X-rays, allowing for clear visualization of these shadows. However, this groundbreaking technology came with its own risks. As mentioned in the caption, many early pioneers working with X-rays suffered from over-exposure to radiation due to inadequate safety measures. This engraving serves as a testament to both scientific progress and human perseverance. It reminds us how far we have come in radiography since those early days and highlights our ongoing commitment to advancing medical imaging techniques while prioritizing safety for both patients and healthcare professionals alike.
