EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the enchanting world of 19th century Paris, where Georges Bizet's iconic opera "Carmen" first came to life. The sketch depicts a costume designed by Multzer for the character Michaela, one of the pivotal roles in this timeless masterpiece. In this portrait, we see a young woman standing with grace and poise, her long hair cascading down her back in elegant plaits. Dressed in a stunning ensemble that reflects both poverty and beauty, she captivates our attention with her enigmatic gaze as she looks away from us. The artist has skillfully captured every intricate detail of the costume - from the delicate veil that adorns her head to the bag she holds tightly in her hand. The text on an envelope adds an intriguing element to this composition, hinting at hidden messages or secrets waiting to be unveiled. This illustration transports us into a world of theatrical performance and stage makeup, evoking a sense of anticipation for what awaits within Bizet's Carmen. It serves as a testament to the fine artistry and craftsmanship that went into creating such mesmerizing productions during this era.
