EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Steve Jones captures the mesmerizing beauty of a Gray reef shark with a remora in Papua New Guinea's Kimbe Bay. The image showcases the stunning underwater world, where these majestic creatures thrive. The Gray reef shark, scientifically known as Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos, is seen gracefully swimming against a vibrant blue background. The photograph highlights the symbiotic relationship between the shark and its companion, the remora. The remora can be observed attached to the shark's body using its specialized suction disc on top of its head. This unique bond allows both species to benefit from each other; while the remora gains protection and access to food scraps from the shark's meals, it also helps keep parasites away from its host. The image exudes an aura of mystery and danger as we witness this apex predator gliding effortlessly through the water. With their sleek bodies and powerful presence, Gray reef sharks are considered threatened species due to overfishing and habitat destruction. Steve Jones skillfully captures this moment in nature with his expert photography skills. Through his lens, he brings us closer to understanding and appreciating these remarkable creatures that inhabit our oceans. This print serves as a reminder of both the fragility and resilience of marine life in Papua New Guinea's rich aquatic ecosystem.
