Antique Framed Print : Sodium chloride crystal
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Sodium chloride crystal
Sodium chloride. Computer model of a plane of the crystal lattice of common salt (sodium chloride), a chemical which is found widely in nature and is used as a food flavouring. Small spheres represent positively- charged sodium ions, and large spheres are negatively- charged chloride ions. Sodium chloride crystals consist of rows of such planes, each arranged so that the chloride ion in one plane fits over the sodium ion in the one beneath it. Each positive ion therefore has six negatively-charged nearest neighbours, and vice versa. The electrostatic attraction holding these nearest neighbours together makes the crystal strong but brittle

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a sodium chloride crystal. The computer-generated model depicts a plane of the crystal lattice, revealing the mesmerizing arrangement of common salt at a molecular level. Sodium chloride, widely found in nature and commonly used as a food flavoring, is represented by small spheres representing positively-charged sodium ions and large spheres symbolizing negatively-charged chloride ions. The crystal lattice structure consists of multiple rows of these planes, with each layer perfectly aligned so that the chloride ion from one plane fits snugly over the sodium ion in the layer beneath it. This arrangement results in each positive ion having six nearest neighbors that are negatively charged, and vice versa. The strength and brittleness of sodium chloride crystals stem from the electrostatic attraction between these nearest neighbors. This powerful force holds them together tightly within this cubic form ionic crystal lattice. Through this remarkable image, we gain insight into the fascinating world of chemistry and molecular structures. It serves as a reminder that even substances as simple as table salt possess an extraordinary level of complexity when examined on such a microscopic scale. Science Photo Library has once again captured an awe-inspiring moment frozen in time for us to appreciate and marvel at its scientific significance.
