EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of scabies, a highly contagious skin infection caused by tiny mites known as Sarcoptes scabiei. The artwork depicts a cross-section of human skin, with the male figures indicating common sites of infection through green dots. Meanwhile, the female mites can be seen burrowing into the top layer of dead skin (pink/brown) in order to lay their eggs (purple ovals). The image not only highlights the physical manifestation of this condition but also emphasizes its unpleasant consequences. Scabies is notorious for causing intense itching and discomfort, making it an extremely bothersome ailment to endure. Moreover, close physical contact facilitates its rapid spread among individuals. However, there is hope amidst this unsettling portrayal. Treatment for scabies involves using insecticide lotion to eliminate these pesky mites and alleviate symptoms effectively. By shedding light on this medical disorder through artistry and scientific accuracy, Science Photo Library's print serves as a valuable educational resource for healthcare professionals and individuals seeking knowledge about various conditions affecting human health.
