Mosquito larva head
Mosquito larva head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified mosquito larva (family Culicidae). The collection of hairs (light brown) are feeding structures used to filter water. The hairs beat through the water filtering out algae, pollen, bacteria and other micro-organisms that the larva feeds on. The mosquito larva hatches from a floating egg and hangs below the surface of the water. It breathes air through a siphon structure attached to its rear (not seen). Magnification: x85 at 6x7cm size
