John Mad Jack Fuller, philanthropist

John Fuller (1757-1834), English philanthropist. Fuller was born at North Stoneham, Hampshire. At the age of four he lost his father, the local clergyman, and at ten was sent to Eton College. In 1777 Fullers uncle died, leaving him estates in Sussex and plantations in Jamaica. He stood for parliament in 1780 and was elected, representing Southampton until 1784 then Sussex from 1801 to 1812. His wealth allowed him to indulge in philanthropy. He was a supporter and sponsor of the Royal Institution in London, he once lent them £ 1000 (about £ 100, 000 in modern value) and never asked for it back. He endowed the Fullerian chairs in chemistry and physiology, built an observatory in his estate at Brightling in Sussex, paid for the first lifeboat at Eastbourne and paid for a lighthouse to be built at Beachy Head. Much admired by the public, he was affectionately known as Mad Jack Fuller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed John Mad Jack Fuller, an extraordinary figure in British philanthropy. Born in North Stoneham, Hampshire in 1757, Fuller's life took a significant turn at a young age when he tragically lost his father. However, adversity did not deter him from achieving greatness. Educated at Eton College and inheriting vast estates and plantations in Jamaica from his late uncle in 1777, Fuller embarked on a remarkable journey of public service. He successfully ran for parliament and represented Southampton until 1784 before serving Sussex from 1801 to 1812. Fuller's immense wealth allowed him to become an ardent supporter and sponsor of various noble causes. His generosity knew no bounds as he lent £1000 (equivalent to approximately £100,000 today) to the Royal Institution without ever seeking repayment. Moreover, he established the renowned Fullerian chairs in chemistry and physiology while constructing an observatory on his Brightling estate in Sussex. Not content with these accomplishments alone, Mad Jack also financed Eastbourne's first lifeboat and commissioned the construction of Beachy Head lighthouse. These acts of benevolence endeared him to the public who affectionately referred to him as "Mad Jack". John Mad Jack Fuller left an indelible mark on society through his unwavering dedication to philanthropy. This mesmerizing portrait captures both his stature as a member of parliament during the vibrant 18th-19th centuries and his role as a patron of scientific advancement within institutions like the Royal Institution.
