Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Iris of the eye, SEM
Iris of the eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the inner surfaces of the iris and adjoining structures in the human eye. At far right (blue) is the edge of the pupil, the hole that allows light into the eye. Coloured mauve is the iris which controls the size of the pupil and therefore how much light will enter. The band of folds down the centre (red) are the ciliary processes. These secrete fluids that nourish neighbouring parts of the eye. They are also the sites of attachment for the long, thin zonule filaments (yellow and green) which are responsible for suspending the lens (unseen). Magnification: unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the iris, the colored part of our eye that controls the amount of light entering. Through a scanning electron microscope (SEM), we are granted an up-close and magnified view of this remarkable structure. At first glance, our attention is drawn to the vivid blue hue on the far right, which represents the edge of the pupil - nature's gateway for light. Adjacent to it lies a mesmerizing mauve-colored iris, responsible for regulating how much light penetrates into our eyes. Its delicate folds create an enchanting pattern down its center in striking red tones. Delving deeper into this microscopic world, we discover another crucial component: ciliary processes. These tiny structures not only secrete fluids vital for nourishing neighboring parts of our eye but also serve as attachment sites for zonule filaments. The long and slender yellow and green strands suspended from these processes play a pivotal role in supporting an unseen lens within our eye. This image serves as a testament to both scientific marvels and artistic wonderment. It allows us to appreciate not only the complexity and functionality of our visual sense but also reveals hidden details that often go unnoticed by human eyes alone. Science Photo Library has once again captured a moment where science meets artistry flawlessly, offering us a glimpse into one of nature's most extraordinary creations –the human eye.
