Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Illustration of a partly-dissected normal heart
Human heart. Illustration of a partly-dissected heart showing the internal structure of its left side, with arteries and veins that service it. As a pump the heart circulates blood around the body. The left side receives oxygenated blood from the lungs via pulmonary veins (short, red). Blood enters heart chambers on this side: atrium first, then a thick-walled ventricle, separated by white valve to prevent backflow. This blood is pumped to the body through the red ascending aorta. Backflow is prevented by another valve (white). Vena cava veins (blue) collect used body blood before it too is pumped through the heart, the right side, to the lungs via pulmonary arteries (light purple)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases an intricate illustration of a partly-dissected normal heart. The image provides a detailed glimpse into the internal structure of the heart's left side, revealing its complex network of arteries and veins that tirelessly service this vital organ. Functioning as a powerful pump, the heart plays a crucial role in circulating blood throughout our bodies. The left side of the heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through pulmonary veins, depicted as short red vessels in the artwork. This life-sustaining blood enters different chambers within the heart: first, it fills the atrium before being propelled into a thick-walled ventricle by means of a white valve that prevents any backflow. The oxygen-rich blood is then pumped to nourish various parts of our body through the ascending red aorta. To ensure efficient circulation, another white valve safeguards against backflow at this stage. On its journey back to be reoxygenated, used body blood is collected by vena cava veins portrayed in blue before being pumped through the right side of the heart towards our lungs via light purple pulmonary arteries. This mesmerizing artwork not only highlights human anatomy but also serves as an educational tool for understanding how this remarkable organ functions and sustains life itself.
