Antique Framed Print : Gorilla skull, X-ray
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Gorilla skull, X-ray
Gorilla skull. Coloured X-ray of a front view of the skull of a male gorilla (Gorilla gorilla). The gorilla is the largest living primate. Its skull differs from a human skull in that it has more pronounced brow ridges (across centre), a smaller cranial capacity (upper centre), and thus a smaller brain, and a pronounced sagittal crest (top centre). The crest provides an attachment site for the powerful muscles that work the jaws (lower centre). The teeth are used for grinding the vegetation that forms the gorillas diet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Gorilla skull, captured through an X-ray imaging technique. The subject is none other than a male gorilla, known as Gorilla gorilla, which happens to be the largest living primate on Earth. A comparison with a human skull reveals distinct differences; this majestic creature possesses more prominent brow ridges and a smaller cranial capacity, resulting in a relatively smaller brain size. Atop its cranium lies a pronounced sagittal crest that serves as an attachment site for the powerful jaw muscles responsible for its formidable bite force. The teeth depicted in this image are specifically designed for grinding vegetation - the primary component of the gorillas' diet. This photograph not only offers insight into the anatomy and jaw structure of these incredible primates but also highlights their unique adaptations for survival in their natural habitat. With vibrant colors enhancing every detail, this print from Science Photo Library captures both scientific precision and artistic beauty. It provides viewers with an opportunity to appreciate the complexity of nature's creations while shedding light on our understanding of these remarkable creatures.
