Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Gale Crater landscape, Mars C014 / 4934
Gale Crater landscape, as imaged by NASAs Curiosity rover on Mars. This rover, part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, landed here on 6 August 2012. The view looks south-south-west. In the foreground is an area of gravel, followed by a swale (depression), then the boulder-strewn rim (red-brown) of a moderately-sized impact crater. In the distance are dark dunes and layered rock at the base of Mount Sharp. The horizon is just over 16 kilometres away. Image obtained on 23 August 2012 during calibration of the 34mm Mast Camera. For the same terrain as seen by the telephoto 100mm Mast Camera, see C014/4935

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing Gale Crater landscape on Mars, as seen through the lens of NASA's Curiosity rover. The rover, a vital part of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, touched down in this very location on 6 August 2012. Looking south-south-west, the image showcases a diverse terrain that tells a story of Martian geology. In the foreground lies an expanse of gravel, followed by a swale or depression and then the rim of a moderately-sized impact crater adorned with red-brown boulders. As our gaze extends into the distance, we are greeted by dark dunes and layered rock formations at Mount Sharp's base. The horizon stretches over 16 kilometers away, emphasizing the vastness of this alien world. Taken during calibration of its Mast Camera on 23 August 2012, this snapshot offers valuable insights for planetary scientists studying sedimentary rock layers and impact craters. It is a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity and relentless pursuit of knowledge about our neighboring planet. As we marvel at this otherworldly vista filled with buttes and mesas against Mars' skyline, let us appreciate how far we have come in exploring space in the 21st century. This photograph serves as a reminder that there is still so much left to uncover within our solar system—a constant source of inspiration for future missions yet to come.
