Female mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the underside of an unidentified female mosquito (family Culicidae). The large compound eyes (pink) dominate the head. The hairy antennae branch off the head from between the eyes, pointing upwards. The underside of the body (lower left) is seen with its six legs. A wing is at lower right. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a female mosquito, captured through a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The image highlights the underside of this unidentified mosquito species from the Culicidae family. The head is dominated by its large compound eyes, exuding an ethereal pink hue. Delicate and hairy antennae gracefully branch off from between the eyes, pointing upwards in perfect symmetry. Moving towards the lower left side of the photo, we catch a glimpse of the mosquito's body with its six legs elegantly positioned. A wing can be observed at the lower right corner, adding to the overall composition. However, what truly captivates attention is the long proboscis attached to the upper center of its head and extending towards the right side. This feeding structure allows female mosquitoes to extract mammalian blood. It is important to note that several species of mosquitoes act as vectors for human diseases such as malaria and yellow fever. This SEM image provides valuable insight into their anatomy and serves as a reminder of their impact on public health. With a magnification level set at x70 for this 6x7cm print size, every minute detail has been meticulously preserved by Science Photo Library - an exceptional portrayal capturing both nature's beauty and potential threats lurking within it.
