Early electrical equipment

Early electrical equipment, historical artwork. Most of the items are different types of batteries (technically called cells). The non-battery items are: a two-way switch (bottom right), an induction coil (top right), a galvanometer (top centre), and an arc lighting device (top left). The batteries are devices from which electricity can be obtained to run an electrical device. The chemicals inside them (liquids in the case of wet batteries) react when placed in a circuit, producing electricity. The first battery was built by Volta (1800). The earliest shown here is the Daniell cell (1836, upper centre). From Cassells Cyclopedia of Mechanics (Hasluck, 1904)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases early electrical equipment, providing a glimpse into the fascinating history of electricity. The artwork features an array of different types of batteries, technically known as cells, which were crucial in obtaining electricity to power various electrical devices. Amongst these batteries are other notable items such as a two-way switch, an induction coil, a galvanometer, and an arc lighting device. Batteries functioned by harnessing chemical reactions within them when placed in a circuit, generating the much-needed electricity. The Daniell cell takes center stage in this image; it is one of the earliest battery designs shown here and was developed in 1836. This historical artifact serves as a testament to Alessandro Volta's groundbreaking invention of the first battery back in 1800. The sepia-toned illustration from Cassells Cyclopedia of Mechanics (Hasluck, 1904) beautifully captures the essence of this technological marvel from the late 19th century. It offers us insight into how early pioneers harnessed and manipulated electricity for practical applications. This artwork not only represents physical apparatus but also symbolizes significant advancements made in both physics and technology during that era. It stands as a reminder of our ongoing journey towards understanding and harnessing electrical energy—an essential component that has shaped our modern world.
