Clematis stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a clematis (Clematis flammula) plant. At the centre of the stem is a large area of pith, consisting of parenchyma cells. Around this is a ring of vascular bundles. Each bundle contains phloem (red and blue) and xylem (yellow and green) cells, which transport carbohydrates and water around the plant respectively. Outside of these is the cortex, which is also made of parenchyma cells and contains bundles thick walled sclerenchyma cells (yellow) that provide structural support.
