Christianized constellations, 1708

Christianized constellations. This is plate 22 from the 1708 edition of the star atlas Harmonica Macrocosmica by the Dutch-German mathematician and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius (1596-1665). The Latin title describes the diagram as showing the first of two celestial hemispheres with Christianized constellations, proposed by Julius Schiller in 1627. The twelve apostles were used for the zodiacal constellations, with northern and southern constellations from the New and Old Testament respectively. First published in 1660, this edition was published in Amsterdam by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases plate 22 from the renowned star atlas Harmonica Macrocosmica, created by mathematician and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius in 1708. The image depicts a celestial hemisphere featuring Christianized constellations, an idea proposed by Julius Schiller in 1627. In this unique interpretation, the zodiacal constellations are represented by the twelve apostles, while other northern and southern constellations derive from figures found in both the New and Old Testament. Originally published in 1660, this particular edition was printed in Amsterdam by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk. It beautifully captures the essence of European history during the late 17th century with its intricate illustrations and Latin text descriptions. The artwork reflects a fusion of astronomical knowledge with religious symbolism, offering a glimpse into how Christianity influenced scientific exploration at that time. The inclusion of biblical characters such as Saint Michael, Saint John, Saint Bartholomew, and many others adds depth to this cosmological representation. Notable biblical elements like the Ark of the Covenant further emphasize the intertwining relationship between religion and astronomy during this period. As we delve into this extraordinary piece of historical artistry, it is evident that Cellarius's work transcends mere scientific documentation; it serves as a testament to humanity's quest for understanding both our place within the universe and our spiritual beliefs.
