EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1880s, capturing a thrilling moment in the Atlantic Ocean. The image showcases a scene of intense competition as dories race against each other in pursuit of a school of fish. Hand-colored with meticulous detail, this woodcut illustration from the 19th century beautifully depicts the vibrant energy and excitement surrounding commercial fishing during that era. The rowing boats, manned by skilled American and Canadian fishermen, navigate through the vast ocean waters off Massachusetts and Newfoundland. These hardworking individuals were part of an industry that played a crucial role in North America's history and economy. Codfish was their prized catch, sustaining both local communities and international commerce. Gloucester, known for its rich maritime heritage, served as a hub for this thriving fishing industry. Sailboats dotting the horizon add to the historical charm portrayed in this artwork. As we admire this vintage print, it transports us to an era when rowing boats were essential tools for those seeking their livelihood at sea. The grand banks and Georges Bank provided bountiful opportunities for these brave men who relied on their skills to secure their next meal or make a living. This artful depiction serves as a reminder of our connection to history while honoring those who dedicated themselves to such demanding yet vital work on the Atlantic waters over a century ago.
