Say 'cheese'! This Diamond lizardfish knows how to strike a toothy pose!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this hilarious underwater snapshot captured by the talented photographer Nuno S, we witness a truly unique moment in nature. Meet the Diamond lizardfish (Synodus synodus) from Deserta Grande, one of the Desertas Islands in Madeira, Portugal. With its mouth wide open and teeth on full display, this fish is ready for its close-up! Looking like it's auditioning for a role in an underwater WWE match, this feisty creature showcases its impressive dental arsenal. Its sharp teeth are perfectly aligned and gleaming as if they've just been polished at a dentist's office. But don't be fooled by its fearsome appearance – despite being part of the osteichthyes family (bony fish), these little guys are quite harmless to humans. They prefer temperate waters and can often be found lurking beneath the waves with their mouths agape. Thanks to Wild Wonders of Europe / Sa and Nuno S for capturing this comical moment that reminds us that even in the depths of our oceans, there is always room for some fun and laughter. So next time you're diving or snorkeling off the coast of Portugal, keep an eye out for these toothy entertainers – they might just put on a show you won't forget!
