Framed Photos from National Railway Museum
St David, 1954
Original oil painting by L A Wilcox for a British Railways (Western Region) poster, showing a passenger ferry on the Fishguard-Rosslare route across the Irish Sea. Many British railway companies operated ferry services, both to Europe and Ireland, and this continued to be the case after the companies were nationalised to form the British Transport Commission in 1948. The St David was in service between Fishguard and Rosslare between 1947 and 1971

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic St David, a passenger ferry that operated on the Fishguard-Rosslare route across the Irish Sea from 1947 to 1971. The original oil painting by L A Wilcox was commissioned for a British Railways (Western Region) poster, highlighting the significant role of railway companies in providing ferry services to various destinations, including Europe and Ireland. The artwork beautifully captures the essence of this maritime journey, with the St David majestically sailing through calm waters. Its sleek design and elegant structure are a testament to both engineering prowess and aesthetic appeal. Passengers aboard this vessel were treated to breathtaking views as they traversed between Fishguard and Rosslare. During an era when British railway companies were nationalized under the British Transport Commission in 1948, these ferry services remained integral to their operations. The St David became synonymous with safe and reliable transportation across borders, connecting people from different nations. This print not only immortalizes an important piece of transportation history but also evokes a sense of nostalgia for those who experienced or witnessed these remarkable journeys firsthand. It serves as a reminder of how railways played an instrumental role in facilitating travel beyond land boundaries while showcasing Britain's rich maritime heritage.
