Steamer Passing Kish Lightship between Dublin and Holyhead, c 1935
Original oil painting by Norman Wilkinson for a London Midland & Scottish Railway poster. Many British railway companies also operated ferry services. Wilkinson was commissioned by several of the companies to produce artwork for use in posters promoting their services. The London Midland & Scottish Railway Company (LMS) was formed in 1923. It operated ferry services across the Irish Sea on routes between Holyhead and Dublin, and Heysham and Belfast. In 1948 all the private railway companies shipping fleets were nationalised, becoming part of the British Transport Commission. National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an original oil painting by the talented artist Norman Wilkinson, commissioned by the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company (LMS) in approximately 1935. The artwork was created for a promotional poster promoting their ferry services across the Irish Sea. The image depicts a majestic steamer gracefully passing the Kish Lightship, situated between Dublin and Holyhead. The vibrant colors and intricate details of Wilkinson's brushstrokes bring this maritime scene to life, capturing the essence of travel during that era. During its heyday, LMS operated ferry routes connecting Holyhead and Dublin, as well as Heysham and Belfast. This particular painting symbolizes the importance of these sea crossings in facilitating transportation between Britain and Ireland. It is worth noting that many British railway companies also ventured into operating ferry services alongside their train operations. However, in 1948, all private railway company shipping fleets were nationalized under the British Transport Commission. Preserved within the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print serves as a testament to both Wilkinson's artistic brilliance and LMS' commitment to providing seamless travel experiences for passengers crossing over from England to Ireland or Northern Ireland.
