EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken by Roland Hicklin for Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to October 1961. The legendary Stanley Matthews is seen here engaging in a rigorous training session on the vast expanse of Blackpool Beach. Dressed in a tracksuit and sporting a bobble hat, Matthews epitomizes dedication and passion for his craft. The image captures the essence of solitude as Matthews runs along the shoreline, with only the crashing waves of the sea as his companion. Despite being surrounded by nature's beauty, there is an undeniable sense of loneliness that permeates through the photograph. As one of football's greatest icons from the 1960s era, Matthews' commitment to exercise shines through every stride he takes. His determination to stay at peak physical condition is evident in his focused expression and powerful movements. This snapshot not only showcases Stanley Matthews' unwavering work ethic but also serves as a reminder of how sport can transcend time and capture moments frozen forever in history. It encapsulates an era when athletes relied solely on their own strength and willpower rather than modern-day technologies or facilities. Roland Hicklin's expertly captured image allows us to witness firsthand the sheer dedication required to excel in professional sports during this period. This print serves as both an homage to Stanley Matthews' remarkable career and a testament to human resilience within athletic pursuits.
