EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Battle of Albert the opening phase of the Battle of the Somme" takes us back to a significant moment in history during World War One. Circa 1st July 1916, British troops are seen gathered in a communication trench, preparing for an imminent attack. The image captures the grim reality and harsh conditions faced by soldiers on the Western Front. Barbed wire lines the trench, serving as a reminder of the constant danger lurking just beyond its confines. The soldiers stand resolute, armed with shovels and tools essential for their treacherous task ahead. In this poignant scene, amidst the chaos and uncertainty of war, we witness a glimpse of camaraderie among these brave men. Some can be seen drinking tea - perhaps finding solace in this small act that momentarily transports them away from their grim surroundings. The Battle of Albert marked one of the bloodiest battles in history, with devastating casualties on both sides.
