EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print by Tom King from Memory Lane Prints, we witness a heartwarming moment between father and daughter. Eighteen-month-old Clare Timewall is held tightly in her father Chris's arms, but what catches our attention is the stream of tears rolling down her rosy cheeks. It was a defining moment for little Clare as she had just been crowned the winner of the highly coveted Dettol sponsored Baby of The Year Award at Carlton Tower Hotel in March 1974. The image beautifully captures the innocence and vulnerability of childhood, reminding us that even moments of triumph can evoke strong emotions. Clare's tear-streaked face tells a story beyond words - perhaps it was overwhelming to be surrounded by cameras and strangers during such an important event. Or maybe these were tears of pure joy, expressing her genuine surprise and happiness at being recognized as the most beautiful baby among fierce competition. This photograph transports us back to the nostalgic era of the 1970s when beauty contests for children were popular events filled with excitement and anticipation. It serves as a reminder that behind every smile lies hidden depths of emotion waiting to be discovered. Tom King's remarkable ability to capture raw expressions makes this print truly special. As we gaze upon this poignant scene, we are reminded that life's precious moments often come wrapped in unexpected packages – sometimes accompanied by tears rather than laughter.
