View of the wreck of HMS Vindictive in Ostend Harbour, Belgium, during the First World War. HMS Vindictive, an Arrogant-class protected cruiser, was launched in 1897, served throughout the war, was fitted out for the Zeebrugge Raid and took part in fierce action on 23 April, when her upperworks were badly damaged by gunfire. She was sunk as a blockship at Ostend during the Second Ostend Raid on 10 May 1918. The Zeebrugge and Ostend Raids gave the ship celebrity, and her bow section has been preserved in Ostend harbour as a lasting memorial. Date: May 1918

This evocative image captures the wreck of HMS Vindictive, a protected cruiser of the Arrogant class, in Ostend Harbour, Belgium during the First World War. Launched in 1897, HMS Vindictive saw active service throughout the conflict, playing a pivotal role in the Zeebrugge Raid on 23 April 1918. During this operation, the ship's upperworks were severely damaged by enemy gunfire. Despite this, HMS Vindictive continued to participate in the Second Ostend Raid on 10 May 1918, ultimately meeting its end as a blockship in the harbour. The Zeebrugge and Ostend Raids brought the ship international fame, and her bow section has been preserved in Ostend as a poignant reminder of the historic events that transpired in these waters.
