How wireless beacons guide ships in the fog

The Marconi invention can determine distance of the ship from the beacon to steer the vessel into a Harbour during foggy weather. The shore transmitter operates on wave-lengths of about 60 centimetres, and its signals are received in two ways on board ship, one by headphones or loud-speaker, and the other by the movement of a needle on the galvanometer-dial fixed in a prominent postion before the navigator

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we witness a pivotal moment in maritime history as wireless beacons guide a ship through the dense fog. The Marconi invention, a game-changer in navigational technologies, enables the vessel to safely approach the harbor during inclement weather conditions. The beacon, located on the shore, operates on short wave-lengths of approximately 60 centimeters. This innovative technology transmits signals that are received on board the ship in two distinct ways. The first signal reaches the crew through headphones or loudspeakers, providing audible guidance. The second signal is detected through the movement of a needle on a galvanometer-dial, a prominent instrument before the navigator. The Marconi invention utilizes dipole aerials to transmit and receive radio waves. The signals, once detected, are crucial for the ship's navigation system. This technology revolutionized the way vessels were steered, providing a much-needed solution for safe and efficient transportation during foggy and bad weather conditions. The Marconi invention marked a significant milestone in the history of radio technologies, expanding the capabilities of telegraphy and paving the way for advancements in wavemeters, receivers, and other navigational indicators. This photograph captures the essence of innovation and the spirit of discovery, as the ship, with the help of the beacon, sails steadily towards its destination, undeterred by the foggy conditions. This image offers a glimpse into the past, reminding us of the ingenuity and determination of those who braved the seas and pushed the boundaries of technology to ensure safe and efficient transportation. The Marconi invention remains an essential part of maritime history, shaping the way we navigate our waters even today.
