Antique Framed Print : White horse - tack
Framed Photos from Mary Evans Picture Library
White horse - tack
A white horse in full flow wearing a distinctive running martingale - used to control the horses head height, and to prevent the horse from throwing its head so high that the rider gets hit in the face by the horses poll or upper neck. When a horses head gets above a desired height, the martingale places pressure on the head so that it becomes more difficult or impossible to raise it higher. Date: 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of equestrianism in the 1910s, featuring a noble white horse in full stride while adorned with traditional tack. The horse's sleek body moves with grace and power, its mane and tail flowing behind it. The focus of the image, however, is the distinctive running martingale that encircles its neck and chest. A martingale is a type of equestrian equipment used to control a horse's head height and prevent it from raising its head excessively. In this photograph, the martingale's straps are taut, indicating that the horse is responding to the rider's commands. The martingale's design is intricate, with multiple straps and buckles that create an intriguing pattern against the horse's white coat. The horse's bridle, with its bit and reins, is also visible in the image. The bit sits in the horse's mouth, allowing the rider to communicate with the animal through subtle pressure. A whip is held in the rider's hand, ready to be used as a motivational tool. The horse's harness, which includes a wheel, is also evident in the photograph. The harness distributes the weight of the rider evenly across the horse's body, allowing for a more comfortable ride. The overall scene exudes a sense of tradition, skill, and the deep bond between horse and rider.
