EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling scene outside Sugg Sports and Radio on High Street in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, back in 1960. The shop's windows proudly display a range of electrical goods available for rent or purchase, attracting the attention of three RAF men passing by. On the left-hand side, another window showcases a diverse selection of sports equipment. The history behind this establishment is as fascinating as the image itself. Frank Howe Sugg, a renowned sportsman who achieved an impressive double playing for both Derbyshire County Cricket Club and Derby County Football Club, founded Sugg Sports in 1888. After retiring from professional sports, he became an umpire before venturing into business. Sugg Sports quickly gained recognition as a leading supplier of football, cricket, and fishing gear throughout its existence until it ceased trading in 2002. This photograph serves as a testament to its enduring success. The snapshot also provides glimpses into life during the 1960s in Scunthorpe. The street is filled with people going about their daily activities while others engage in some window shopping along this vibrant avenue. Preserved through time by Michael Walters' lens from Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , this image offers us a glimpse into both local retailing history and British sporting heritage.
