EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene of Alexandria harbour as viewed from the deck of the TSS Saxon during World War I. The image transports us back in time to 1917, a pivotal year in the history of the First World War. The TSS Saxon, a British transport ship, anchored in the harbour played a crucial role in the war effort by transporting troops, supplies, and munitions to the Mediterranean theatre of war. The photograph reveals the bustling activity of the harbour, with several ships anchored or underway, their masts and sails silhouetted against the backdrop of the setting sun. The Egyptian coastline, with its palm trees and sandy beaches, can be seen in the distance. The tranquility of the harbour scene is in stark contrast to the turmoil of war that was unfolding in the region. The TSS Saxon, a steam-powered vessel, was part of a fleet of ships that played a vital role in the Allied Powers' campaign in the Middle East. The ship's presence in Alexandria harbour was a testament to the British naval dominance in the Mediterranean and the importance of Egypt as a strategic base during the war. This photograph is a rare and valuable glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the historical events of the First World War. The image is a reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who served during the war and the crucial role that shipping played in the war effort. The TSS Saxon, anchored in Alexandria harbour, is a symbol of the enduring legacy of the First World War and the indelible mark it left on world history.
