EDITORS COMMENTS
Tobit's Sight Restored: A Historical and Religious Narrative of an Angelic Encounter This image depicts the biblical story of Tobit's sight being restored, as told in the Book of Tobit from the Old Testament. In this scene, Tobit, an elderly and once-blind man, is seen gratefully embracing the angel Raphael, who had miraculously healed him. The story unfolds with Tobit, a pious and charitable man, living in Nineveh during the Assyrian Empire. Blinded by years of suffering and loss, Tobit's life was filled with despair. Meanwhile, his son Tobias, who was also on a journey to retrieve the debts owed to his father, happened to meet Raphael, an angel in disguise. Raphael promised to guide Tobias on his journey and restore Tobit's sight. The angel's instructions were precise, and Tobias followed them faithfully. He carried a fish, which Raphael had instructed him to keep, and applied its gall to Tobit's eyes. The miraculous healing took place, and Tobit's sight was restored. This image beautifully captures the moment of revelation and gratitude between Tobit and Raphael. The historical and religious significance of this event is profound, as it demonstrates the power of faith, the importance of following divine guidance, and the transformative impact of an angelic encounter. This print, from the esteemed Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich history and religious traditions of the past. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the belief in the divine intervention in human lives.
