EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the 1920s, Sydney Jewell is seen standing next to a car outside the Resident Surgical Officers (RSO) house in Nairobi, Kenya. The image captures a moment in time during the early days of colonial medical practice in East Africa. Sydney Jewell was a prominent figure in the medical community during the 1920s, serving as the Matron of the British Empire Hospital in Nairobi. The RSO house, where she is seen here, was the residence for the medical officers in training, providing them with a place to live while they gained valuable experience in the field. The car in the photograph adds an intriguing element to the scene, suggesting a sense of modernity and progress in the midst of the colonial setting. Cars were a relatively new technology in Kenya at the time, and their presence would have been a novelty for many of the residents of Nairobi. The buildings in the background, including the RSO house and other structures, provide a glimpse into the architectural style of the colonial era in East Africa. The use of red-tiled roofs and whitewashed walls is characteristic of the period, reflecting the British influence on the region's built environment. Overall, this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the essence of a bygone era in the history of medical practice in East Africa. Sydney Jewell's presence adds a personal touch to the image, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical photographs from the region.
