EDITORS COMMENTS
This oil on canvas painting, titled "Scene in Wealden Times," by Eli Marsden Wilson (1877-1965), transports us back to the Cretaceous period in Great Britain. The scene is set in the Weald area of southeastern England, a region renowned for its rich fossil deposits. The painting depicts a fertile, brackish landscape, teeming with life during the daytime of the Cretaceous era. Archosauria, a group of ancient reptiles that includes dinosaurs and their ancestors, dominate the scene. In the foreground, a Diapsida, a subgroup of Archosauria, basks in the sunlight, its scaly skin glistening. This Diapsid, a member of the Dinosauria order, is likely a herbivore, its long neck reaching towards the foliage above. In the background, other Archosauriformes, early Archosaur ancestors, can be seen. Among them, a Diapsid with a more reptilian appearance, and an Archosauromorpha, an even more ancient relative, with a more primitive body structure. The painting's title, "Wealden Times," refers to the geological period, the Wealden, during which these ancient creatures thrived. Eli Marsden Wilson, a British painter, created this masterpiece before 1935. His meticulous attention to detail and understanding of the geological context make this painting a valuable historical document and an exquisite work of art. The original painting is held at the Natural History Museum in London, a testament to the rich natural history of Great Britain and the European continent during the Cretaceous period.
