In this evocative black-and-white photograph, the once bustling market place of Moorslede, a small town in West Flanders, Belgium, lies deserted and open to the elements during the defensive battles of the First World War. Dated between July and September of 1917, the scene depicts the aftermath of intense combat, with cobblestone streets now empty of people and vehicles. The buildings that line the square, their facades pockmarked with bullet holes and shrapnel damage, stand as silent witnesses to the great conflict that had engulfed the region.
