EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in May 1914, King George V and Queen Mary pay a visit to the Royal Aircraft Factory in Farnborough to inspect the latest addition to the British military aviation fleet, the RE1 biplane. Accompanied by Brigadier-General Sir David Henderson, the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Flying Corps, and E.T. Busk, the Chief Designer of the Royal Aircraft Factory, the royal couple are seen examining the aircraft with great interest. The RE1, also known as the "Royal Flying Machine No. 1," was the first military aircraft designed and built entirely in the UK. It was a significant development in the history of military aviation, marking the beginning of Britain's dominance in the field. The RE1 was a two-seat biplane with a maximum speed of 65 miles per hour and a range of 200 miles. It was equipped with a 50 horsepower engine and was primarily used for reconnaissance and training purposes. The photograph captures a moment of pride and achievement for the British military and aviation industry. King George V and Queen Mary's presence at the factory underscores the importance of military aviation in the early 20th century and the role it played in shaping the future of warfare. The image also highlights the collaboration between military leaders, engineers, and the royal family in advancing military technology. The RE1 went on to serve in the First World War, and its design influenced the development of subsequent military aircraft. This photograph is a testament to the innovation and progress in aviation technology during this period and the pivotal role the Royal Aircraft Factory played in shaping the future of military aviation.
