EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, the narrow one-way bridge entering the city of Pegu, Burma, is a bustling hub of activity. The bridge, built by the returning British army in the 1950s with a maximum three-year guarantee, is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the local people. The bridge's age is evident in the shoelace cables that have replaced the original ones, a common solution for the Burmese before they could afford a new one. The photograph captures the vibrant roadside stalls that line the bridge, selling an array of goods from fresh produce to handmade crafts. The earth-filled brick structure of the bridge, which tumbled during the 1938 earthquake, adds to the sense of history and tradition that permeates the scene. In the background, several great mounds of ruined pagodas can be seen, their modern little counterparts standing proudly atop them. This juxtaposition of old and new, ruin and restoration, is a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the resilience of the people of Pegu. The photograph, taken in 1952, transports us back to the 1950s, a time of transition and change in Burma. The image offers a glimpse into the daily life of the Burmese people during this period, providing a fascinating insight into their culture and traditions. This photograph, with its rich historical context and vibrant scene of everyday life, is a must-have for anyone interested in the history of Burma or the 1950s. It is a testament to the enduring appeal of the past and the beauty of the world around us.
