EDITORS COMMENTS
(The Rejoicing of Mexicans at the Start of the Century) is a captivating copper engraving by the renowned French engraver Bernard Picart, published by Jean Frederic Bernard in Amsterdam in 1723. This intricately detailed work of art depicts a lively and colorful scene of Aztec celebrations marking the beginning of a new 52-year cycle. The engraving showcases a horizontal composition filled with vibrant energy and movement. A large group of indigenous people, dressed in their traditional attire, are seen engaged in various dances and ceremonies. The central focus is on a grand ballet, where a group of dancers perform an intricate dance routine, their bodies in perfect synchronization. The intricacy of the engraving is evident in the detailed costumes, the expressive faces of the dancers, and the richly decorated surroundings. The use of contrasting black and white creates a striking visual effect, highlighting the dynamic movements and the intricacies of the design. The scene portrayed in this engraving is a celebration of the Aztec rites and ceremonies, which were an integral part of their cultural heritage. The Aztecs believed that the world went through a cycle of 52 years, and the beginning of a new cycle was cause for great rejoicing. This engraving is an excellent representation of the indigenous people of the Indies, showcasing their rich cultural heritage and the importance they placed on their traditions. It is a testament to Picart's skill as an engraver and his ability to capture the essence of a moment in time, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical and cultural art.
