EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning glass model showcases the intricate beauty of Physophora hydrostatica, a type of hydrozoan jellyfish, captured in the late 19th century by the renowned Blaschka brothers, Leopold (1822-1895) and Rudolf (1857-1939). Housed at the Natural History Museum in London, this delicate masterpiece is a testament to the brothers' exceptional skill and dedication to preserving the natural world through art. Physophora hydrostatica, also known as Leptolina hydrostatica, is a member of the Physophoridae family within the class Hydrozoa, which is part of the phylum Cnidaria, commonly referred to as coelenterates. This jellyfish is unique in its hydrostatic form, meaning it does not have a distinct medusa stage like many other jellyfish. Instead, it retains its bell-shaped structure throughout its entire life cycle. The Blaschka brothers meticulously crafted this model using glass, capturing the delicate details of the jellyfish's bell, tentacles, and the intricate structures of its leptolinae, the tiny organisms that form the jellyfish's colony. The model's fragile beauty is a reminder of the delicate balance of life in the natural world and the importance of preserving it for future generations. The Blaschka brothers were pioneers in creating glass models of various marine organisms, including jellyfish, siphonophores, and anemones. Their work was a significant contribution to the field of natural history, providing a means to study and display these delicate organisms in a way that was not possible through traditional preservation methods. This Physophora hydrostatica model is a prime example of their exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to preserving the natural world through art.
