Short S. 38 - SA. 1 Sturgeon S. 1 RK797
Short S.38/SA.1 Sturgeon S.1 RK797, the first prototype of a new carrier-borne strike and reconnaissance aircraft for the Royal Navy. RK787 can be seen with flow realisation tufts attached to the port wing to investigate flow separation at high angles of attack. Intended for the new large carriers laid down at the end of the war, the requirement disappeared when the new carriers were cancelled at the end of the war. A small production run was built of a target towing and target facilities version for the Royal Navy, capable of operating from carriers if required. Date: circa 1948

EDITORS COMMENTS
Short S.38/SA.1 Sturgeon S.1 RK797: The First Prototype of a Carrier-Borne Strike and Reconnaissance Aircraft for the Royal Navy This photograph captures the first prototype of the Short S.38/SA.1 Sturgeon S.1 RK797, a groundbreaking carrier-borne aircraft designed for the Royal Navy in the late 1940s. The aircraft, with its sister ship RK787 visible in the background, was undergoing tests with flow realization tufts attached to the port wing to investigate flow separation at high angles of attack. Intended for the new large carriers that were being laid down at the end of World War II, this aircraft was part of a new requirement for a carrier-borne strike and reconnaissance aircraft. However, the requirement disappeared when the new carriers were cancelled at the end of the war. Despite the setback, a small production run was built of a target towing and target facilities version for the Royal Navy. Capable of operating from carriers if required, this variant provided essential services for the Navy's training and testing programs. The Short S.38/SA.1 Sturgeon S.1 RK797 was a significant development in post-war aviation technology, showcasing the innovative spirit of the Royal Navy and the aviation industry in the late 1940s. Circa 1948.
