EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of celebration and relief as the news of the Armistice reached Paris on the night of November 11, 1918. The towering Eiffel Tower, bathed in the soft glow of its lights, stands proudly against the darkened Parisian skyline. In the foreground, the sandy beach of Paris Plage stretches out towards the camera, with the gentle waves lapping at the shore. The historic moment is commemorated by the figure of Gunner Vivian John Cummings, a soldier from the 3rd Canadian Division of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, who gazes out towards the iconic landmark. Born on July 31, 1875, Cummings and his comrades had endured the hardships and horrors of the First World War, and the sight of the lit tower signaled the end of the conflict and the beginning of a new chapter in history. This poignant image, taken on Armistice Night, is a testament to the bravery and resilience of the soldiers who fought in the Great War, and serves as a reminder of the significance of this pivotal moment in military history.
